Chapter 14
Our Happy News
The day of our big end-of-the-year field trip finally comes. I wake up early because Iâm just too excited to wait for Mom to wake me. The sun is blazing through my bedroom window. A perfect day for a field trip. All three of the grade six classes are going to the Axeford Zoo. Iâm not sure if Iâm more excited about the zoo or about not having to sit in class all day. I know Tina is just as excited as me. I think everyone is.
I stretch my arms up and climb out of bed. I look over and see Obeena shoving her empty food dish around the cage. Iâm starting to notice that lately her dish is getting empty much faster. Iâve been giving her bigger amounts of food, but she seems to be eating it as fast as I give it to her.
Dad has complained to Mom that Iâm overfeeding her. He thinks we are spending too much money on rabbit pellets and treats. I guess heâs right. Obeena seems to eat more and hop less. I reach for the half-empty bag of pellets and fill up her food dish. Obeena rushes to the dish and starts nibbling madly. Momâs been talking about her friend Katrinaâs baby having a growth spurt, because heâs eating more than usual. So, I guess rabbits must have growth spurts too. What Obeena has left in the bag wonât last long, so Mom will have to go out and buy some more.
As soon as I shower and get dressed, I rush downstairs toward the front door. Mom yells out to me as I dash past the kitchen. âHey! Slow down, you speeding little bullet! What about breakfast?â
âIâm not hungry, Mom, and I have to get going! Today is field trip day!â
I bolt out the front door and down the front stairs. Nadia is waiting for me on the sidewalk. Itâs the first day her mom is actually letting her walk to school with us. We start half walking, half skipping down the sidewalk. As we near Oak Street, we start jogging toward Tina. Nadia holds on to her headscarf as we run.
âAre you as excited as I am?â I ask her.
âMore!â Nadia squeaks.
When Tina spots us, she rushes down her driveway. We all hug each other and scream.
Four yellow buses are pulling up in front of the school as we arrive. The bus in the front parks right at the entrance. The driver shuts off the engine, takes out a newspaper and starts reading. He notices us giggling and jumping up and down. He waves at us as we pass to go inside the building. We decide we will rush to the front of the lineup so we can get a three-seater on the friendly manâs bus.
Inside the school is chaos. The sixth-graders are noisy and hyper. Principal Warren calls our three classes down to the gym over the loudspeaker. When we get there, he is standing with a mic in his hand.
